TÃtulo : Birdsong Tipo de documento: texto impreso Autores: Faulks, Sebastian, Autor Editorial: New York [US] : Vintage Books Fecha de publicación: 1993 Número de páginas: 483 p. Il.: 21 cm Dimensiones: impreso Idioma : Inglés (eng) Idioma original : Inglés (eng) Palabras clave: AMERICAN LITERATURE, WORLD WAR I – NOVEL, SENTIMENTALISM IN LITERATURE Resumen: The novel tells two stories separated by time, but featuring characters connected through family. The novel’s main story is about Stephen Wraysford, focusing on his experiences during World War I. A secondary story features Elizabeth Benson, Stephen’s granddaughter, who discovers her grandfather’s journals and begins to learn about his life through them.
The book opens before the war, in Amiens, France. There, Stephen visits the home of his friend Rene and his wife, Isabelle. Rene is employed by a textile factory, and lives an outwardly happy, middle class existence with his much younger wife. Both Rene and Isabelle are unhappy in their marriage, however, and soon Stephen and Isabelle engage in an affair. This domestic discord is set against the political discord of unhappy industrial workers, who eventually go on strike.
Isabelle eventually reveals the relationship with Stephen to her husband. Rene throws Stephen out, and Isabelle leaves with him for southern France. There, Isabelle becomes pregnant, but does not reveal her pregnancy to Stephen. Instead, unsure of their relationship, she leaves to live with her sister and parents at their family home. Isabelle’s father arranges for her to return to Rene with her honor intact, though she still harbors deep feelings for Stephen. She never reaches out to him, however.Ubicación : 823.308/F262b Reserva

TÃtulo : Plainsong Tipo de documento: texto impreso Autores: Haruf, Kent, Autor Editorial: New York [US] : Vintage Books Fecha de publicación: 1999 Número de páginas: vi, 306 p. Il.: 21 cm Dimensiones: impreso Idioma : Inglés (eng) Idioma original : Inglés (eng) Palabras clave: AMERICAN LITERATURE, COUNTRY LIFE – CITY LIFE – FICTION Resumen: Summary: The Interwoven Lives in Holt: In Plainsong by Kent Haruf, we are taken to the small town of Holt, Colorado, where we are introduced to a cast of characters whose lives are interwoven in unexpected ways. The story begins with the McPheron brothers, Harold and Raymond, who are struggling to adapt to the new living arrangements after Victoria, a pregnant teenager, is taken in by them following her mother's abandonment.
Meanwhile, Tom Guthrie, a high school teacher, is dealing with his own personal struggles. His wife, Ella, has fallen into a deep depression, leaving him to care for their two sons, Ike and Bobby, on his own. The narrative follows Tom's attempts to balance his responsibilities as a father and a teacher while dealing with his wife's deteriorating mental health.
The Struggles of Adolescence: As the story progresses, we witness the challenges faced by the boys in the town. Ike, the older of Tom's two sons, is bullied at school, while his younger brother, Bobby, is struggling to understand his mother's condition. Victoria, the pregnant teenager, is also dealing with her own set of problems, including her strained relationship with her mother and the difficulties of being a young, single mother-to-be.
Despite their different backgrounds, these characters find themselves seeking comfort and companionship in each other. The McPheron brothers offer Victoria a home, and the Guthrie boys find solace in their friendship with a girl named Maggie, who has her own family issues to contend with.
Community and Support: Throughout Plainsong, we see the importance of community and support in dealing with life's challenges. The characters in Holt come together to help one another, offering kindness, understanding, and a sense of belonging. This is especially evident in the relationships between the McPheron brothers and Victoria, as well as between the Guthrie boys and Maggie.
Despite the hardships they face, the characters in Plainsong show resilience and determination. They find strength in each other and in the unyielding landscape of the high plains, which serves as a powerful backdrop to their lives.
The Power of Connection
As the story unfolds, we see how these seemingly disconnected lives begin to intersect and influence one another. The characters find common ground in their shared experiences of hardship and loss, and they form bonds that help them navigate their way through difficult times.
In the end, Plainsong is a testament to the power of human connection. It portrays the beauty and complexity of ordinary lives, and the ways in which people can find strength and resilience in the face of adversity when they come together as a community.Ubicación : 813.30876/H221p Reserva
