| Resumen: |
Summary : Two women, far apart in age yet close in character, become locked in a riveting duel. An emergency brings a grandmother and granddaughter into dangerous proximity: they agree to share the same apartment. Both are ferociously independent, self-willed, strong-minded. Mutually fascinated, they try to exert their influence on each other. And life under the same roof becomes a subtle power game with rules so complicated that only the two players fully understand them. At one point the grand-mother says, “I’m not nice, and I’m too old to star now.” The granddaughter´s malice matches her own. In their battle of wits, the first victory goes to the old woman, the last, definitive one, to the young.
Set in a landmark part of Paris, this poignant tale with its singularly topical theme-where do old people go?-is Simenon at his formidable best, in the evocative setting, the psychological acuity, the absorbing telling. |
