Gaudà Afternoon is a lighthearted mystery about a missing person and several kidnappings, set in Spain. For most, it's your typical cozy mystery. It doesn't have blood, graphic violence, or sex, but it does have plenty of emotion, strange characters, and laughter.
It is set in Barcelona, Spain. At the beginning of the novel, Cassandra Reilly, a forty-something translator of Spanish literature, is sitting in her freezing London apartment translating a surrealist Latin American novel and dreaming of warmer climes when she receives a call from Frankie Stevens. Frankie is a friend of a friend who is going to Spain to try to find her free-spirited husband, who is supposedly in Barcelona.
Frankie is beyond rich and too obsessed with her appearance to bother learning the basics of tourist Spanish, so she sees no problem with "renting" a personal translator to accompany her. Cassandra, eager to thaw out, jumps at the chance despite having learned that such assignments are rarely what they first seem. Therefore, Cassandra isn't at all surprised when, during her first morning in Barcelona, Frankie's story begins to change along with Cassandra's job description. To say more would spoil the surprises on this roller coaster ride through the many twists and turns that make up this mystery, but let me give you a hint: nothing and no one in this mystery is exactly who they appear to be. |
