Ubicación : 813.54/W691g Autores: Wilson, Barbara, Autor Título : Gaudi afternoon Fuente : Washington [US] : The Seal Press, 1990, 172 p. Temas : AMERICAN LITERATURE – FICTION NOVEL Resumen : Gaudí Afternoon is a lighthearted mystery about a missing person and several kidnappings, set in Spain. For most, it's your typical cozy mystery. It doesn't have blood, graphic violence, or sex, but it does have plenty of emotion, strange characters, and laughter.
It is set in Barcelona, Spain. At the beginning of the novel, Cassandra Reilly, a forty-something translator of Spanish literature, is sitting in her freezing London apartment translating a surrealist Latin American novel and dreaming of warmer climes when she receives a call from Frankie Stevens. Frankie is a friend of a friend who is going to Spain to try to find her free-spirited husband, who is supposedly in Barcelona.
Frankie is beyond rich and too obsessed with her appearance to bother learning the basics of tourist Spanish, so she sees no problem with "renting" a personal translator to accompany her. Cassandra, eager to thaw out, jumps at the chance despite having learned that such assignments are rarely what they first seem. Therefore, Cassandra isn't at all surprised when, during her first morning in Barcelona, Frankie's story begins to change along with Cassandra's job description. To say more would spoil the surprises on this roller coaster ride through the many twists and turns that make up this mystery, but let me give you a hint: nothing and no one in this mystery is exactly who they appear to be....leer masleer menosReserva

Temas : AMERICAN LITERATURE, FICTION NOVEL Resumen : Summary : Rooted in a scrupulously accurate reading of scripture, Joshua is a profoundly moving, deeply inspiring book that no reader will ever forget.
Sometimes it happens. After two thousand years, the human race may be given a second chance.
When Joshua moves to a small cabin on the edge of town, the local people are mystified by his presence. A quiet and simple man, Joshua appears to seek nothing for himself. He supports himself by working as a carpenter. He charges very little for his services, yet his craftsmanship is exquisite. The statue of Moses that he carves for the local synagogue prompts amazement as well as consternation.
What are the townsfolk to make of this enigmatic stranger? Some people report having seen him carry a huge cherry log on his shoulders effortlessly. Still others talk about the child in a poor part of town who was dreadfully ill but, after Joshua’s visit, recovered completely.
Despite his benevolence and selfless work in the community, some remain suspicious. Finally, in an effort to address the community’s doubts, Joshua is confronted by the local church leaders.

Temas : AMERICAN LITERATURE, FICTION - SOCIAL NOVEL Resumen : Caroline Venable has everything her Southern heritage promised: money, prestige, a rich husband--and a predictable routine of country-club luncheons and cocktail parties. Caroline is the chatelaine of a magnificent home, hostess to her husband's wealthy friends and prospective clients, and the official "one-woman welcome wagon" for young, eager talent that her husband, Clay, imports to their corner of South Carolina to work for the family company--a vastly successful land-developing conglomerate.
If Caro drinks a little too much for Clay's liking, he knows the reason why, and he takes comfort in the fact that she can escape to the island in the Lowcountry that her beloved Granddaddy left her. Wild and seemingly timeless, the island is a place of incomparable, breathtaking beauty--and it is the one place where Caroline can lose herself and simply forget.
Roaming the island is a band of wild ponies, whose freedom and spirit have captivated Caro since she was a child. When she learns that her husband must either develop the island or lose the company that he spent his whole life building, she is devastated. The Lowcountry is Caroline's heritage--the one constant she believed would never change. A resort would not only tame (and therefore destroy) the island she loves--but what will happen to the wild ponies?
Spurred to action and inspired with new purpose, Caroline must confront the part of herself that she has numbed with alcohol and careful avoidance, and she must reconsider her priorities--what is important that she would die for it? In fighting to save the island--her island--Caroline draws on an inner strength that forces her to reconsider her role in society, her marriage, and, ultimately, herself.
Low Country is a story of personal renewal and transformation --one woman's proper Old South upbringing and expectations colliding with the new South's runaway prosperity. ...leer masleer menosReserva
