Ubicación : 823.914/B974e Autores: Burgess, Anthony, Autor Título : Earthly powers Fuente : New York [US] : Penguin Books, 1981, 648 p. Temas : ENGLISH LITERATURE, FICTION, LITERATURE - PHILOSOPHY AND LETTERS Resumen : Historical novel narrated by Kenneth Toomey, a successful but artistically unfulfilled writer, on his 81st birthday. The narrative spans the 20th century, exploring themes of good and evil, faith and doubt, and the impact of historical forces on individual lives. Toomey, a gay man estranged from his family and the Church, contrasts with his brother-in-law, Carlo Campanati, a charismatic priest who becomes Pope. The novel delves into complex moral questions, examining how good intentions can lead to evil, and features real-world events like the Jonestown massacre and Nazi atrocities.
The novel is framed by Toomey's 81st birthday and his recounting of his life, interspersed with his interactions with the Archbishop of Malta regarding Carlo's potential sainthood.
Toomey, a cynical and worldly writer, is contrasted with Carlo, an optimistic and devout priest, highlighting the novel's exploration of faith and morality.
The novel incorporates significant historical events of the 20th century, including both World Wars, the rise of fascism, and the Jonestown tragedy, demonstrating the impact of these events on individuals and society.
Burgess explores the complexities of human behavior, questioning whether good actions can lead to evil and whether evil is inherent or a product of circumstance.
The novel grapples with questions of faith, doubt, the nature of good and evil, the consequences of individual actions, and the role of historical forces in shaping human lives.
Burgess draws inspiration from figures like Somerset Maugham and Noël Coward for Toomey's character and Pope John XXIII for Carlo, while incorporating real-world events and figures into his fictional narrative....leer masleer menosReserva

Ubicación : 813.54/W691g Autores: Wilson, Barbara, Autor Título : Gaudi afternoon Fuente : Washington [US] : The Seal Press, 1990, 172 p. Temas : AMERICAN LITERATURE – FICTION NOVEL Resumen : Gaudí Afternoon is a lighthearted mystery about a missing person and several kidnappings, set in Spain. For most, it's your typical cozy mystery. It doesn't have blood, graphic violence, or sex, but it does have plenty of emotion, strange characters, and laughter.
It is set in Barcelona, Spain. At the beginning of the novel, Cassandra Reilly, a forty-something translator of Spanish literature, is sitting in her freezing London apartment translating a surrealist Latin American novel and dreaming of warmer climes when she receives a call from Frankie Stevens. Frankie is a friend of a friend who is going to Spain to try to find her free-spirited husband, who is supposedly in Barcelona.
Frankie is beyond rich and too obsessed with her appearance to bother learning the basics of tourist Spanish, so she sees no problem with "renting" a personal translator to accompany her. Cassandra, eager to thaw out, jumps at the chance despite having learned that such assignments are rarely what they first seem. Therefore, Cassandra isn't at all surprised when, during her first morning in Barcelona, Frankie's story begins to change along with Cassandra's job description. To say more would spoil the surprises on this roller coaster ride through the many twists and turns that make up this mystery, but let me give you a hint: nothing and no one in this mystery is exactly who they appear to be....leer masleer menosReserva

Ubicación : 813/G514j Autores: Girzone, Joseph F, Autor Título : Joshua Fuente : Australia [AU] : Harper Collins Religious, 1995, 301 pag. Temas : AMERICAN LITERATURE, FICTION NOVEL Resumen : Summary : Rooted in a scrupulously accurate reading of scripture, Joshua is a profoundly moving, deeply inspiring book that no reader will ever forget.
Sometimes it happens. After two thousand years, the human race may be given a second chance.
When Joshua moves to a small cabin on the edge of town, the local people are mystified by his presence. A quiet and simple man, Joshua appears to seek nothing for himself. He supports himself by working as a carpenter. He charges very little for his services, yet his craftsmanship is exquisite. The statue of Moses that he carves for the local synagogue prompts amazement as well as consternation.
What are the townsfolk to make of this enigmatic stranger? Some people report having seen him carry a huge cherry log on his shoulders effortlessly. Still others talk about the child in a poor part of town who was dreadfully ill but, after Joshua’s visit, recovered completely.
Despite his benevolence and selfless work in the community, some remain suspicious. Finally, in an effort to address the community’s doubts, Joshua is confronted by the local church leaders.
