Ubicación : 813/T796o Autores: Tremayne, Peter, Autor Título : Our lady of darkness: A celtic mystery Fuente : London [UK] : Headline, 2000, 365 pag. Temas : MYSTERY NOVEL Resumen : Summary : In mid-seventh-century Ireland, Sister Fidelma of Cashel-sister to the King of Muman, an advocate of Brehon Courts, and religieuse of the Celtic Church-returns hastily from a pilgrimage to the Shrine of St. James. The news that brings her back is that her companion and friend, the Saxon monk Brother Eadulf, is under arrest for a serious crime in the neighboring kingdom of Laigin. Riding furiously through hostile territory, she arrives only to find out she is too late. Eadulf has already been tried and found guilty of the murder of a young girl. Even worse, Laigin's king has abandoned the traditional judicial code of Ireland in favor of the ecclesiastical Penitential from Rome-and under this code he is to be executed the following morning.
Convinced that her friend is innocent, Fidelma has only twenty-four hours before his execution to come up with evidence persuasive enough to sway the king into allowing an appeal of Eadulf's conviction. Facing a king determined to make an example of Eadulf and an old adversary of her own, Fidelma soon realizes that nothing is as it was portrayed, and behind the heinous crime is an even more shocking conspiracy. Now, Fidelma must unravel her most perplexing puzzle before time runs out for her closest companion.

Temas : AMERICAN LITERATURE- MYSTERY NOVEL Resumen : Summary : The story begins as a rotten Christmas for Scarpetta: Temple Gault has struck again, leaving a naked, apparently homeless woman shot in Central Park on Christmas Eve; Scarpetta, as the FBI's consulting pathologist, is called in. Later, a transit cop is found shot in a subway tunnel, and, back home in Richmond, Virginia, the body of a crooked local sheriff is delivered to Scarpetta's own morgue by the elusive, brilliant Gault. The normally unflappable Scarpetta finds herself hyperventilating and nearly shooting her own niece. In the end, some ingenious forensic detective work and a visit to the killer's agonized family set up a high-tech, difficult to follow, climax back in the New York City Subway, which Gault treats as the Phantom of the Opera did the sewers of Paris....leer masleer menos Reserva

Temas : AMERICAN LITERATURE, DETECTIVE NOVEL, MYSTERY, BRIBERY – NEPOTISM, SUICIDE - BULLYING Resumen : This time Spenser and his buddy Hawk are helping a couple of troubled friends (i.e., theyre working without a fee). The first case involves the denial of tenure for Professor Robinson Nevins. While tenure meetings are always closed-door affairs, Nevins assumes that the recent suicide of graduate student Prentice Lamont (who some claim was having an affair with Nevins) ruined his chances for a coveted permanent position. Spenser and Hawk cut a brawl-strewn path through the members of the tenure committee on their way to the surprising truth of the Nevins case.
The other investigation pits Spenser against the unknown stalker of K.C. Roth. Spensers girlfriend, Susan, has known K.C. for a while, and while the PI finds Ms. Roth a bit melodramatic, hes always eager to help a damsel in distress. The only problem is that after hes apparently resolved the case, K.C. begins a little stalking of her own - of Spenser....leer masleer menosReserva

Temas : AMERICAN LITERATURE, PSYCHOLOGICAL - MYSTERY NOVEL Resumen : At the beginning of the novel, Bud Corliss returns from serving in World War II. He was stationed in the Pacific until he received an honorable discharge in 1947. Though he witnessed egregious crimes against humanity, Corliss doesn’t manifest any of the shell-shock signs of a typical soldier who has survived these experiences. In fact, during the war, he relished scenarios in which he exerted power over his adversaries. The moment in which he felt the most power was after wounding a Japanese sniper. Incapacitated and fearing for his life, the soldier wet his pants, prompting Corliss’s simultaneous feelings of disgust and superiority. This experience at war establishes his psychopathic tendencies and suggests that he is deeply broken beneath his calm and bright exterior.
After Corliss’s discharge, he goes back to the United States and starts college. There, he meets Dorothy Kingship and courts her because her father is a copper industry tycoon. He hopes to somehow use the connection to become wealthy himself but keeps their relationship a secret while he plots out his strategy. When Dorothy discloses that she is pregnant, Corliss panics. He does not intend to assume the responsibilities of a father, and fears that Dorothy’s conservative father will break ties with her and ruin his shot at becoming rich. He concocts an evil plan in which he convinces an oblivious Dorothy to write a note that, once taken out of context, could easily be interpreted as a suicide letter. He then stages her suicide by throwing her off the top of a building. Because Dorothy had followed his request to not tell anyone about their relationship, Corliss gets away with no ties to the “suicide.” He returns to his typical days living with his mother, who thinks her son is a model citizen....leer masleer menosReserva

Ubicación : 813.30872/C276a Autores: Carr, Caleb, Autor Título : The alienist Fuente : New York [US] : Bantam Books, 1995, 597 p. Temas : AMERICAN LITERATURE, DETECTIVE NOVEL, MYSTERY – SUSPENSE, CRIMINAL PSYCHOLOGY Resumen : The Alienist tells the story of Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, a psychologist (“alienist,” in the parlance of the day) who leads a secret investigation into a string of gruesome killings. He is assisted by John Schuyler Moore, a New York Times police reporter who acts as the story’s narrator; Sara Howard, the police commissioner’s secretary and an aspiring detective in an age when no women had yet ascended to that position; and the Isaacson brothers, Marcus and Lucius, new recruits to the detective ranks who bring fresh ideas and substantial knowledge of modern forensic methods. Kreizler subscribes to a theory of individual psychological context, which posits that childhood experiences, especially traumas, have substantial influence on a person’s behavior in adult life. Using this theory of context, Kreizler teaches his fellow investigators to build a psychological profile of a savage killer who is murdering and mutilating children who are being commercially sexually exploited, nearly all of whom are boys wearing makeup and dressed as girls. Kreizler’s investigation proceeds in secret thanks to the clandestine approval and support of Police Commissioner Theodore Roosevelt, the most famous and by far the most important of the novel’s real-life historical figures. The investigation requires secrecy because the guardians of the city’s established order, from the mayor’s office to the Episcopal Church to the patrons of the Metropolitan Opera House, regard Kreizler’s views with suspicion. Furthermore, Roosevelt is in the process of purging the city’s police department of its corrupt old order, reforming its practices, and building a modern police force. The old order, however, will not go quietly....leer masleer menos Reserva
